VINTAGE PEAR CRATE LABEL LIST PAGE 3
Having been raised on a family farmed pear orchard, I have a certain affinity
for them, especially Placer County. There are a few extremely avid pear
label collectors, however the number is not large, and often centralized to a
certain growing region. For the most part, pear packing plants moved to
cardboard boxes for pear labels sometime in the 1960's. The smaller plants
or ranch packs waited longer due to the expense of upgrading their facility.
A few labels in this group have zip codes. Zip codes are one of the
definite lines in dating labels. It became mandatory to include zip codes
in the government marking requirements some time in the 1960's. Often you
will see the same exact label with and without a zip code. Also you may
see overprints on the label. This was done in situations were there were
quite a few left over and it was economical to overprint rather than waste.
